introduction
As you review the document, please note:
It is for educational purposes only and is not intended to replace or alter University of Pittsburgh Policies and Procedures.
Except where specifically noted, the management strategies provided are suggestions, not requirements.
The management strategies suggested should not be viewed as best practices or preferred approaches; the plan you devise will vary according to the specific situation of the employee you supervise.
This document is not an exhaustive list of every possible COI scenario. You are encouraged to look for similarities between your particular situation and the hypothetical examples presented when you formulate your management plans.
The case studies present a variety of COI management techniques, and you may find a combination of techniques to be most appropriate in a given situation.
Depending on your employees situation, you may wish to use more or fewer elements suggested in the case studies to create a management plan. In devising a plan for an especially complex situation, or one involving a greater degree of risk, more elements might be appropriate (for example, research involving humans carry greater risk and would require greater management).
You may not need to read every case study in this document; you can go directly to the scenario that most closely resembles your employees situation. For your convenience, the case studies are arranged in the same categories used in the Universitys COI disclosure form; for example, Remunerative Activities, Technology Transfer Activities, Ownership Interests, Offices and Positions.
If you encounter a situation that is not applicable to any of those addressed in the case studies, or you wish additional assistance, please do not hesitate to contact:
